Third Grade
This year may be the best year in school you have ever experienced. We look forward to a rewarding, productive, and successful school year with you and your parents!
Parents,
Homework is very important and essential for your child's success. Please check and sign your child's agenda every night for information about homework, as well as communication from the teacher. Additionally, studies show that reading nightly with your child helps improve reading fluency and comprehension. For suggestions on how you can support your child at home, do not hesitate to ask!
Your continued support of your child is essential in helping bridge the jump between second and third grades. In third grade, students begin the transition into the higher levels of thinking and comprehension that they will experience throughout the rest of their educational path. Third grade students are expected to not only know how to read passages and selections, but also to comprehend what they read at a high level. Additionally, students begin to apply the mathematical concepts they learned in lower grades in problem solving situations, such as word problems, as well as begin to learn new concepts, such as multiplication and division. This change in thinking can be a challenge for some third grade students, but we look forward to working with you to help your child succeed as never before!

Ms. Michelle Burton – Grade Level Chair
Hello all! My name is Michelle Burton. I am originally from Detroit, Michigan. I attended the fabulous Howard University in Washington, DC where I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing. Upon graduation I decided to share my love of education and join the Teach for America program. This program granted me the opportunity to move to Houston and become a 3rd grade teacher here at Garcia Elementary. I have been at Garcia Elementary for four years and truly enjoy teaching and working with the students.
Ms. Ashleigh Stacy
My name is Ashleigh Stacy and I am originally from Woodbridge, Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C. I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia in 2007. I have been a teacher at Garcia for three years and this is my second year in third grade. I love teaching math and fostering a love for learning in students.
Ms. Belinda Moore
Ms. Belinda J. Moore was raised in Houston, TX by two loving parents. She has one sister and brother, who also reside in Houston. Ms. Moore comes from a family of educators; her mother and grandmother were both teachers, as well as various relatives working in the education field as counselors, principals, and in administration. Ms. Moore has worked with 3rd grade during the 2006-2007 school year at Cage Elementary and taught kindergarten at Garcia for two years. She enjoys reading, writing, and singing.
Ms. Victoria Alicea
It has been a blessing joining Garcia ES! Teaching for the past 6 years in New York City and relocating to Houston has been a big adjustment filled with wonderful surprises. I think it took about a week to get accustomed to my students saying, “Yes, Mam.” Of course, the gentle and polite southern accent is a welcome sound to the harsh tones of the NYC dialect. My teaching philosophy is first make a one-on-one connection with each student, next create fun, engaging lessons, and finally take time to reflect and rejuvenate because teaching is the hardest job I’ve ever had! My goal is for my students to become life-long learners and never stop expanding their horizons!
Mr. Juan Urdiales
Hi there! My name is Mr. Urdiales. I am from Monterrey Mexico, which I missed very much. I worked at Garcia about seven year ago and I am happy to be back. I enjoy eating out, traveling and anything art related.
