Field Day 2010

March 29 & 30, 2010

Coach Vega and his crew put together a day full of fun activities for all grade levels to enjoy.  The days were pleasant, enjoyed by all.  Everyone particularly liked the Tug-o-War.  Team spirit and sheer determination often resulted in which class was pulled across the line.  Parents offered support and physical help, as there was much to be planned to ensure that the students got the most out of their Field Day.

Wax Museum - Feb. 24, 2010

Second Grade students presented their annual wax museum, featuring famous people from different times and places.
Congratulations to the students who presented the projects and recited  the biographical sketches.  Kudos to Mrs. Clemente, Mrs. Denham, Mr. Bolt, Mrs. Rodriguez and Mrs. Corrigeux for the outstanding show, and thanks to all the parents who helped create the costumes and poster boards.   This is a great example of active learning!

Hush for Haiti Project - Jan. 26, 2010

Mrs. Iniguez had an idea - help the people of Haiti and lead her students by example.  During the week of Stanford testing, quiet was enforced by a fine of one cent per infraction, money to be donated to the American Red Cross for the Haiti relief fund.  Her idea went school-wide and ended with a special Fox News broadcast and presentation by guest speaker, MacArthur Pierre-Louis,  former Garcia educator and practicing attorney who was born in Haiti.  Showing pictures, slides and memorabilia of his childhood touched everyone's heart.   It was a terrific experience we will not forget.  See the STUDENTS  page for a podcast by 5th grade students.

Texian Time Machine - Nov. 13, 2009

The fourth grade students enjoyed a great day with the Texian Time Machine as an extension of their social studies curriculum.   The historians taught the children about Texas in the 1820s and 1830s.  The children learned about games other children used to play, Native American tools and crafts, how a printshop worked, how cotton was spun into clothing and how blacksmiths worked.  They also cooked cornbread, made butter and were made members of a volunteer militia.

Fourth Grade Literacy Workshop with Erik Cork - Oct. 1, 2009

Fourth graders had a BLAST  learning new writing skills in a day-long workshop with Erik Cork's Rap, Rhythm & Rhyme: Rebuilding the Writing Foundation.
This Fast-Paced Writing Workshop empowers students to systematically organize their thoughts and communicate them effectively on paper. Lively learning strategies are passionately demonstrated. Music, laughter, mnemonic devices and audience participation make it  a "Grammatical and Verbal Reawakening."
