I am very honored to be the principal at this wonderful school. I am very pleased and excited to be working with such a committed group of professionals and hard working students.
I started at Garcia Elementary as a fourth grade bilingual teacher in 1992, and later became the Title One Coordinator and finished as Assistant Principal before moving to Roosevelt Elementary as principal. I ask for your support and cooperation as we move together to improve each and every day for our students’ continued academic achievement.
I look forward to meeting every parent and visiting with you throughout the school year. I know Garcia Elementary will achieve exceptional successes with all of us working together. Our students deserve the very best, and I will work towards that goal each and every day.
Sincerely, Rebecca Mir
Martha Garcia - Title I Coordinator
Hello, I am Martha Garcia, Title I Coordinator. Welcome to another great school year here at Garcia Elementary. I look forward to working with parents, teachers and students each and everyday. Our campus is a Title I school because Title I is a federal funded program with the intent to improve the academic achievement of students who are economically disadvantaged. The purpose of Title I is to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). As Title I Coordinator, I coordinate the parental involvement monthly meetings, VIPS (Volunteers in Public School), grade level field lessons, and make sure that the Title I student data is up to date in the district’s system.
I also coordinate the Title III program on our campus. Our campus is also a Title III school because of the bilingual population on our campus. I keep up to date all the information relating to our LEP (Limited English Proficiency) student files and student data in the district’s system. As an educator, I strive to provide the best support to our students, teachers and parents. “To teach, to guide, to explain, to help, to nurture- these are life’s noblest attainments.” -Frank Tyger
I am Melissa Centeno, Instructional Coordinator. I support teachers and students with curriculum, best practices, instructional strategies, testing, and creating a positive and safe learning environment. My philosophy in education is that “All children CAN learn when GIVEN the OPPORTUNITY”. It is my passion to assist teachers with “at risk” students by targeting their instruction and gauging their success.
Maggie Luna - Math Coach
My name is Maggie Luna and I’m proud to be the Math Coach at Garcia Elementary. As a math coach, I encourage teachers to provide opportunities for students to explain and justify their mathematical reasoning. These opportunities can provide invaluable insights into what students understand and in which areas of mathematics they need more experience.Listening and observing our students working through mathematical tasks provides our teachers ongoing opportunities to make instructional decisions and refine the structure of their lessons accordingly. My goal as an educator is to provide all students the opportunity to grow through demonstrating the relevancy of math to everyday life.In doing so, students can more easily see the purpose of learning and embracing it.I firmly believe“Students will perform and strive for excellence when high expectations are expected. If we want to continue challenging our students, we need to continue challenging ourselves.”
